AI COMMONS HEALTH & WELLBEING HACKATHON

The AI Commons Health & Wellbeing Hackathon is an online competition to develop ground breaking and innovative working prototypes, models or solutions driven by Artificial Intelligence that can solve identified local health problems or improve identified existing health technology solutions in Tanzania.

Summary

The AI Commons Project is a proof of concept of a new methodology of developing Artificial Intelligence solutions that allows anyone, anywhere to benefit from the possibilities that AI can provide. The project aims to increase/improve the accessibility, reproducibility, contextualization and enhancement of Artificial Intelligence solutions globally and especially in emerging markets.

The project aims to demonstrate how global communities of AI experts can learn and co-create mutually beneficial solutions with the opportunity for cross- county incremental enhancement.

The AI Commons Health & Wellbeing Hackathon is an online competition for AI experts, health workers, academic researchers, health tech organizations, students and any other interested party with groundbreaking and innovative working prototypes, models or solutions driven by Artificial Intelligence to solve identified local health problems or improve identified existing Artificial Intelligence health solutions in Tanzania.

  • Knowledge, skill and competence required to take up the challenge
  • Demonstrated experience and history of taking up a similar challenge Team's familiarity or understanding of the problem space
  • Diversity of the team (members from different background, must have at least one member with a medical background or a verifiable understanding of the problem space)

Hackathon Guidelines

1. Definitions

“Sahara Ventures”, “AI Commons”, "we", "our", and “us" refer to Project Initiators and “you” while "yourself" refers to the Hackathon participant or the parent/legal guardian of any minor or under-aged Hackathon entrant. By entering you agree to be bound by these rules.

2. Application/Entry Periods

Application for the Online Hackathon starts on the 14th of August, 2020, and closes on the 21st of August, 2020 by 11:59 pm East Africa Time (WAT). After selection of participants, entries for working prototype/solution opens on the 7th of September, 2020 and closes on the 28thth of September, 2020 by 11:59 pm East Africa Time

3. Eligibility

Application for the Online Hackathon starts on the 14th of August, 2020, and closes on the 21st of August, 2020 by 11:59 pm East Africa Time (WAT). After selection of participants, entries for working prototype/solution opens on the 7th of September, 2020 and closes on the 28thth of September, 2020 by 11:59 pm East Africa Time

4. Competition Structure

  • You can only apply as a team of a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 5 members
  • Successful applicants will be contacted and invited for a live briefing session to learn more details about the challenge and ask questions to gain further clarity.
  • Working solution/prototype entry opens on the 7th of September, 2020, and closes on the 28thth of September, 2020. Submission details will be provided to the selected applicants at the live briefing session.
  • Problem stakeholders will be assigned to you to evaluate your ongoing work and provide necessary guidance and support in the development of a solution and prototype from the 14th to 18th of September 2020
  • Winners will be announced on the 16th of October and will be contacted afterward to provide their personal details

5. How to Participate

i: Team up & Apply

Apply to be part of the Hackathon
Comply with the selection criteria by creating a quality team that has the following attributes:

  • Skills and competence to take up the challenge
  • Past experience in solving similar problems or competing in similar Hackathons
  • A diverse team with members from different relevant backgrounds
  • Understanding of the problem space

Alternatively, an individual can apply and will be teamed up with other teams/individuals to create a diverse and capable team.

ii: Selection and Mandatory Live Briefing Session

If selected, you will be invited to attend a mandatory live briefing session, where more details of the hackathon will be shared and you can ask questions to gain more clarity about the challenge.
Note: Any team that fails to attend the briefing session will automatically be disqualified and replaced with another team.

iii: Assignment of Mentors/Experts

Problem owners and stakeholders (these are individuals/professionals who have personal experience of the problem or are involved in the development/advocacy of a solution) will be assigned to each team to evaluate your ongoing work and provide necessary support and guidance before the final submission of your solution and documentation on the 28th of September, 2020.

iv: Submission of Entries

Providing solutions to any problem statements: we have ….problem statements. For inspiration, each problem statement also comes along with possible AI solutions. The documentation will be shared with you. Ensure to submit your prototype or solution, codes, data, video and other supporting documents in the required format that will be disclosed during the briefing session, on or before the close of submission of entries on the 28th of September, 2020 by 11:59 pm East African Time (WAT).

6. Use of Your Entry

Your submission will be made open-source, and made available to anyone to replicate, modify, improve or contextualize in alignment with the project’s goal. By submitting a solution/prototype, you grant us an irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide right and license to use, review, assess, test and otherwise analyze your Submission and all its content in connection with this project, and use your submission in any media whatsoever now known or later invented for any purpose deemed fit by the project initiators.

7. General Conditions, Terms and Release of Liability

To the extent allowed by law, by participating in the competition, you agree to release and hold harmless, Sahara Ventures, AI Commons and their respective partners from and all liability or any injury, loss, or damage of any kind arising in connection with any prize won.
